Psychiatric Assessment, Diagnosis, and Case Formulation
When clients present to the Center with anxiety, mood disturbances, substance abuse, thought disorders or cognitive dysfunction, it is usually necessary to perform a psychiatric assessment to arrive at a DSM-IV-TR diagnoses which in turn serves to guide treatment. Likewise, when clients present with problems in living, it is necessary to understand the problem as it manifests in the client and others in their environment. This is called a case formulation and helps guide psychotherapeutic services.
Have you ever wished you had someone with whom to seriously discuss goals or to help you set life goals? Do you have a need to move toward self-actualization? This is the realm of life-coaching and counseling. Life-coaching and counseling are active techniques where a third party assists you in setting goals and in developing plans to make them a reality. It’s a little bit like having a mentor, but not the same. Life-coaches hang around just long enough for you to move solidly in the direction of your dreams.
Psychotherapy is a term for a number of approaches to helping people with individual, relational, or family problems. Psychotherapy utilizes numerous talking techniques to help people gain insight into their problems; to change perspectives, thoughts, and feelings; to learn effective ways of coping and relating with others; to gain support during difficult periods; and to grow psychologically and spiritually. As a nurse-psychotherapist, Dr. Rodriguez utilizes an eclectic mix of clinical helping skills to help clients individually, as couples and families, or as groups to bring about the changes they desire or need. With the right support and assistance, change becomes possible!
For your convenience, individual psychotherapy sessions are offered over the phone or via Internet video conferencing using the application called Skype – provided that you pre-arrange this. For phone sessions, you are to call the Center at your scheduled appointment time. Please note that if you live a long distance from the Center, you may have to pay Long Distance Charges to your phone company. For this reason, we recommend that you install the program called Skype onto your computer. This will allow you to make free phone or video calls to the Center using your computer. Our charges for these sessions are the same as in-person sessions. Also please be aware that you will have to provide credit card information at the beginning of the session so that the appropriate charges can be made. You will also have to fill out the initial forms and email or mail them to the Center before your sessions can begin.
* For Skype - video sessions, you must also have headsets and a web camera.
